Queens-bred G5 ELZ has hip-hop royalty in his DNA, and is currently embarking on a path toward his own musical legacy. Fueled by appearances on the Rap is Outta Control and Sway in the Morning radio shows, and performing overseas alongside the likes of DJ Premier, the Queens-representative is well on his way.

The son of legendary record producer Larry Smith, G5 ELZ recently sat for an episode of Efficacy, the artist spotlight series from veteran publicist Fiona Bloom, to speak on his influences, inspirations and future goals.

Keep an eye out for G5 ELZ. His project, The Northside Punch, is due soon.

People often talk about the pursuit of the American Dream. They talk about what they’re willing to do; what they’re willing to sacrifice; what it means to them. But that’s all they do—they talk. L. Smith AKA G5 Elz stands at the opposite end of that spectrum—he does

The Queens rapper retains an unprecedented work ethic necessary to catapult him from underground lyricist into renowned artist. So often in Hip hop, and music at large, talent retains a “too cool for school” mentality and projects a sense of being “put upon” when asked questions. When ZeusWolf sat down with L for his interview, he jumped at the opportunity to share his story; he was present, insightful, curious, and above all else, hungry. It’s genuinely refreshing to work with a kid who is so focused and determined. And it doesn’t hurt that his rhymes are dope.

L Smith was first introduced to the internet thanks to Global Grind. His place in the music world was further solidified thanks to none other than the Funk Master Flex, who tweeted Smith’s “X-Drive” video and featured him in his Indie Spotlight—an endorsement most MCs would kill for. Vindication from these highly credible sources kept the wheels moving on L’s momentum train and he’s been moving with a full head of steam ever since.

I’m not sure if I believe in pre-destination, but if any case proves its validity, it’s the case of L Smith. L is the son of legendary producer, Lawrence “Larry” Smith. Larry Sr. was a pioneer Hip-Hop producer widely known for his work with Run-DMC, Whodini and Kurtis Blow and is revered for his innovative style. Compared to the likes of Rick Rubin, James Brown and Quincy Jones, Hip hop is forever indebted to Larry’s musical flavor that provided the framework for some of the industry’s greats.  While L dabbles in production, he channels his father’s musical gift through his pen game and rugged flow. Yes, having a legendary producer for a father definitely helps foster musical career growth, but L is out here making a name for himself outside of his pops.

If you haven’t heard of L Smith yet, you will. His musical background is largely shaped by his membership with group, G5 Army—a collective of L’s contemporaries. Aside from this group, L is affiliated with a crew you might be a little more familiar with: Manolo Rose’s Concrete Rose. Known for hit “Run Ricky Run” and supplying Troy Ave with the skeleton—to put it lightly—for “All About the Money”, Manolo Rose is quickly rising as NYC’s next big thing.

Often using his surrounding Queens scenery to inform his bars, L is a true New York rapper—he lets the streets’ whispers shape his persona, rhymes and messages. He emits a 90s vibe that is peppered by today’s sound, forming his intriguing and appealing identity. Smith is the rhyming equivalent of a Swiss Army knife and uses his multi-functional ability to craft clever, multi-layered songs. These hard-hitting lyrics are brought to life through his three projects, N.Y. TimesBread and Butter NY Rules and 2nd Coming.

L is currently working on his fourth project, The Northside Punch. This project will take us through the city via Smith’s vantage point and will deepen his NYC loyalty and appreciation. Release date for this project is still TBD. I’m extremely excited to witness his career’s growth and to continue working with the Queens rapper. His palpable work ethic is admirable, inspirational and infectious; spend five-minutes speaking with him and you’ll want to say, “Fuck everything, I’m going to pursue my destiny.” This kid’s got some big dreams. Don’t be sleeping when they’re achieved.

g5 elz freestyle on sway in the morning live from sxsw youtube studios on shade 45 sirius xm

Sway decided to surprise the crowd and bring a ringer to start the second set of our Austin cypher with @Grafh. As ‘Painkillers Reloaded 2‘ nears, it was a good opportunity to let loose with free bars and give fans a reason to grab his project. Some would be afraid to go after Grafh but Houston shows no fear as @TonyRi_chard got into a fire 16 of his own. Next was a familiar hyena, @Phene who makes wack MCs think twice about their career choice. New York was back in the place with @G5_ELZ working the stage before @ZZznarco woke things up even more. Philly has a reputation for having some of the nicest when it comes to bars and @ChillMoody lived up to his city’s name. Definitely one of the hardest in this round. Things ended nicely with a Texas touch as Dallas native @TheChromeOzone put his stamp on our #SwaySXSW stage. -Larry Simmons Jr via Swaysuniverse.com

Who Is G5 Elz? (DETAILS)

Get use to the name because the ambition he has to become one of the greatest musicians of his generation means no days off. Music was love at first sight for Lawrence Smith, also known as G5 Elz, from the day he watched Biggie’s “Hypnotize” video he was inspired to bring his own visions to life and began to write his own lyrics at just eight years old. Being from Queens, home of some of the greats, there is no doubt Smith has done his homework. Building his craft from what he sees and hears, and his years of experience, Smith has started from scratch and is giving the world music inspired by true hip-hop.

Lawrence Smith has appeared on Funk Flex Indie Music Spotlight, performed at countless small venues in New York City, and has put out three projects. First project being The N.Y Times in 2013, where Smith created and shared stories from his experiences living in New York. In 2014 came his second project Bread and Butter (N.Y Rules), Smith gives a little personal advice and some rules of New York. Right after he wasted no time to create his third project, 2nd Coming.

It does not stop there, Lawrence Smith new project Northside Punch is in the works and will represent the growth he has made since his last project in 2014. The grind doesn’t stop for Lawrence Smith or G5 Elz, taking care of things in his personal life and building himself as the artist he was destined to be. Blessed to be the son of hip-hop pioneer producer Larry Smith, Smith is determined to create his own legacy but also making sure that this time the name isn’t forgotten.

What prompted your start for your career path?

A death in the family Febuary 20th, 2011 (my grandmother who raised me, Angie Lillian Smith) started it all. After she passed, I was 16 years old on my own, it was time to be a man and grow up make something of myself but the only problem was money. Once I turned 17, I started making a legit living part-time to fund my music.

Who first recognized your talents and what it meant to you?

I’d say around 2004 when my cousin D-Boogie and I started playing around with beats but really in 2006. Classmates gravitated towards me this one time I rhymed in my 6th grade class in the dance room; I will never forget. Industry wise, the 2012 staff of Global Grind, President Michael S., and music editor Brittney Lewis caught wave of my music. “How To Rhyme” was my first single I put out and it caught fire on the internet! These moments mean everything to me! I found my nitch. Some people are athletic, photogenic, but not me; I can make music.

First problem you have come across?

Being overlooked by press. This game is oversaturated with bloggers and wanna-be-rappers. It’s hard but not hard to break through the clutter if you keep at it. You can be talented but hard work beats talent. That’s what my senior year classmate told me one time we spoke about the subject (shout outs to Phil!).

As an up and coming artist what was it that you’ve seen that you needed to improve on?

Tighten up my flow, delivery, writing skills, pronunciation, discovering new ways to approach a beat, and brush-up on my various instrument skills. Listen more and talk less along with learning the art of music.

How will you make an impact given a chance?

By being myself and taking chances! Simple like that life is like a dice game and I’m a high roller ready to shake this industry up make a mark be in the history books.

Why should people take notice in your work?

People should take notice in my work because it’s like your favorite grandma’s home-cooking. I put my heart and soul into it plus it’s once in a life-time.

What are your Top 5 albums or mixtapes of all time?

Nas-Illmatic, Notorious B.I.G.-Ready To Die, Jay-Z -In My Lifetime Vol.1 , Fabolous-Soul Tape 3 , Run D.M.C (debut album)

Where do you see your career in the next 10 years?

A few solid bodies of work (commercially and artistically), gold and platinum discography, respect from the greats and historians, sneaker endorsement, large audience/following, my immediate family and I financially/emotionally comfortable, putting some hard working friends in great positions to be successful, and still grinding because life isn’t fair and there will be something I am trying to accomplish.

Larry Smith, the “King of Beats,” Has Passed Away

BY COMBAT JACK

 DEC 19, 2014

When the topic of rap super producers comes up, names like Pharrell, Kanye, and Timbaland are mentioned, but few remember rap’s first super producer, Larry Smith. Smith, rap’s King of Beats, passed away on Dec. 19, 2014. Born in 1951 in the St. Albans section of Queens, N.Y., he developed skills as a bassist. He eventually dropped out of Andrew Jackson High School to master his craft by going on the road. Smith ended up touring the South, the Midwest, and eventually Toronto.

Smith got his first break when he was recruited to play on the Kurtis Blow song “Christmas Rappin’.” The song became a hit, and Smith began his career as a rap producer, working on rap hits like Kurtis Blow’s “The Breaks,” an early rap record that was included in Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 singles.

Through his work with Blow, Smith met Russell Simmons (then, Kurtis Blow’s manager), and they formed Rush Groove Productions, producing local rap hits like “The Bubble Bunch” and “Money (Dollar Bill Y’all)" featuring Jimmy Spicer as well as Krush Groove’s “Action.”

Smith’s career began to fly when he produced demos for Run-DMC, “It’s Like That” and “Sucker MCs”. As a musician who played speed metal, Smith introduced the electric guitar to rap in the Run-DMC song “Rock Box.” During the recording of these songs at New York’s Greene Street, studio owner Steve Loebwas skeptical of Smith incorporating rock guitars in a rap song. “You’re out of your mind,” Loeb said to Smith. Smith replied, “Niggas play rock and roll too.” Released on March 27, 1984, Run-DMC’s self-titled debut album was an instant smash, mostly because of songs like “Sucker MCs” that catered to true rap fans and “Rock Box, which was an instant crossover hit and became the very first rap video to appear on MTV.

The genius who was Larry Smith knew when to infuse rock with Run-DMC and when to switch to classic R&B sounds with early rap group Whodini. Together they produced hits like “Five Minutes of Funk,” “Friends,” and “Freaks Come Out at Night.” He also produced songs for rap group the Fat Boys as well as Rodney Dangerfield’s rap spoof record, “Rappin’ Rodney.

Larry Smith’s work with Run-DMC and Whodini ushered in a new era of rap. The “New School” was born, replacing the “Old School” movement that was championed by pioneer acts like the Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and Spoonie Gee.

As the famed partnership between Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin picked up steam in their Def Jam label, Smith’s relationship with Simmons soured. Still, Smith flexed his skills on Run-DMC’s second album, King of Rock, which incorporated more rock sounds and heavy guitar riffs than their prior album. Released on Jan. 21, 1985, King of Rock established Run-DMC as that era’s rap kings. They even landed a cover of Rolling Stone, the first rap group to ever do so.

HOW SUCH AN INFLUENTIAL PIONEER OF THIS ART FORM COULD END UP LIKE THIS IS CRIMINAL.

With the advent of sampling ushered in by fellow super producer Marley Marl, Smith found himself disconnected with rap’s new wave. As a consummate musician, he refused to sample other artists, and this stance resulted in him leaving the music game. Still his body of work left an indelible print in the genre as his music has been sampled by Jay Z, Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, Kid Rock, De La Soul, Redman, Maino, and more.

In 2007, Smith suffered a severe stroke that left him unable to speak. He spent the last few years of his life in a New York City hospital as a “ward of the state,” meaning he was not able to afford medical care on his own. He passed away during the early hours of Dec. 19, 2014, due to complications in connection with his failing health. How such an influential pioneer of this art form could end up like this is criminal.

Still, in speaking to top producers like Just Blaze, Larry Smith will always remain in their “Top Five” rap producer lists. In communicating with his son Lawrence Smith, a.k.a. “G5ELZ” via text and Twitter, he shared, “Tell people don’t be sad. Tell them to just listen to his music. Let them know about King of Beats.”

R.I.P. Larry Smith, King of Beats.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: G5 ELZ

PUBLISHED OCTOBER 17, 2014 BY BRITTANYSHAWNTE

Got another spotlight for you all on this wonderful Friday! Expect several within the next few weeks! As always, if you are an upcoming artist, designer, producer, etc., and you are interested in featuring your work on The Spotlightemail me (please allow some time for response)!

Today on the blog, we have G5 Elz! Exposed to music all of his life, the rapper learned and loved the art of rhyming. From Dr. Seuss books to watching rappers like The Notorious BIG, Jay Z and Nas, he quickly caught on to rapping. “By the time I was 8 years old, I began writing my own rhymes in school, preferably math class,” G5 joked. “Then it was always rapping in front of the TV like I was whatever rapper in the video with the remote in my hand.”

Hailing from Queens and living in NYC, G5 Elz recognizes that his environment has had a great deal of influence over his music. “My environment inspires everything because I’m seeing and hearing noises everyday then I incorporate that into my rhymes,” the rapper acknowledged. Though he always knew that creating music was his life’s purpose, he began to take his music seriously after his grandmother passed away in 2011. “I stepped my game up to another level and started molding solid projects, performing, and profiting.”

Currently the rapper has two mixtapes out, The NY Times and Bread and Butter, as well as his most recent EP 2nd Coming which is available on iTunes! Inspired by friendships, rough times, blessings, and his dreams, G5 worked with Keem Bel’air, Shawn Giftz, Halftime, and more on the project. You can also check out his current single “X-Drive” featuring Sv Don , just released on October 2, 2014, below!

Music Video: "89 Crack" Elz

By: Destini Hornbuckle & Ally The Journalist

Queens, NY native and rapper Elz sat down with our very own Ally The Journalist to discuss everything from studio life to musical inspiration. “I have been creating music since I was little probably the age of three", says Elz.

"I remember I had got a drum/beat machine for Christmas and I drove my house crazy”, the MC continued. Check out the video for Elz’s viral hit “89 Crack” off of his mixtape New York Times and be sure to read the exclusive interview with the NY lyricist after the jump.

Ally The Journalist: You're a pretty skilled rapper, when did you start doing music and what/who inspired you to start doing music?

Elz: Thank you. I have been creating music since I was little probably the age of three. I remember I had got a drum/beat machine for Christmas and I drove my house crazy. From there it was different instruments that I have picked up[such as] the piano, violin, and flute.

Eventually the rapping came when I found my love for writing when I was eight. I always thought rhyming was cool, so you know I just put two and two together and here we are today. But who inspired me to start doing music was my home. I come from a musical background so I figured it was bound to happen.

Ally: There's a lot of young artists on the come up, especially from New York, what makes you different?

Elz: Yea I am aware, but what makes me different in my opinion from everyone else is that I just be true to myself when I compose music .When you being yourself you are being different.

Ally: I heard your song “89 Crack” playing at the Global Grind office one day. Can you explain the record and the concept of the video?

Elz: That’s wassup, and the record was produced by my guy Jes Dollaz from Southside Jamaica Queens. He is down with the Lost Boyz and I remember he played this beat for me in Harlem at a sit-down the day after my birthday. I was sitting on the beat for three months until one day

I was buying a pair of jays and I looked at them s**** and said “this that 89 Crack”. [Later that day] I went home and the rest is now history. “89 Crack” to me is New York Fly s*** with a gritty criminal bounce and whisper adlibs.

Basically I wanted to give the viewers a rugged NY experience that’s why I shot the video in some of New York’s most raw neighborhoods Harlem, Brooklyn, L.E.S. because as you know that’s where crack cocaine was dominant during its era and with everything else going on at that time with hip-hop those were the places to be.

Ally: It seems like you have a whole movement behind you; how important is it for you to show love to those who helped you along the way?

Elz: Yea man shouts to everyone! It’s important for me to show love because everyone are key players. Either you are a fan of my music or a critic; it is just motivation to craft better art.

As far as my loved ones, friends, and neighborhood it is just a fact to show love back to the people that helped make me who I am. I learned a lot from everyone I met so for me to be in a position to represent for those who taught me and support me “I WILL NOT LOSE”

Ally: Describe what it's like in the studio. Are you the relaxed type or the focused type (of artist)?

Elz: Ah studio nights are my favorite, I consider myself a focused artist I don’t depend on smoking or drinking to make better music. I rather brainstorm ideas from everyone around so we can craft the track.

Shouts to my engineers UPN and Finsta. Those cats are the guys behind the scene making things happen, because it is never just me it’s a team effort. But I say studio nights are really chill.

A lot of jokes because we are watching TV in between the mixing. When I have some of my friends come they talk s*** on tracks because I want everyone to have fun around me and enjoy my passion for music.

Ally: If you could perform with any rapper who would it be?

Elz: Wow this is a hard question, but I’d say Nas. He is a dope cat he gets “stars , star struck” so performing with one of the kings would be cool.

Elz "89 Crack" (NEW VIDEO)

Posted 2 years ago.

This Elz joint is literally dope!

The last time we heard something from Elz, it was the smooth “Anything” that sampled Aaliyah’s “One In A Million.” And now the young emcee – who reps Queens like no other – is back with the visuals to “89 Crack” off his New York Timesmixtape.

The primarily black-and-white video is directed by TJ Marsoul – with color emphasis on certain things here and there – and has Elz on his street ish, as we get to see a bit of what the scene is like in NYC.

If you’re a fan of Elz, then you’ll definitely like this right here.

“Anything” is a little different.

MUSIC: ELZ Feat. Halftime & Kai Roy’al “Camera Dance!”
The song, which samples Aaliyah’s iconic “One in a Million,” is a smooth track that’s meant for the ladies. It just shows that the boy ELZ is versatile.

Have you ever done the “Camera Dance?” Don’t act like you haven’t!

NEW MUSIC: ELZ “How To Rhyme (State Of Emergency)”

When you’re in the club looking so fresh, so clean, you can’t help but want to pose, especially when you hear that click-click for a pic.

New York native Elz links up with members of his G5Army, Halftime and Kai Roy’al, who would have to second, third, and fourth that notion with their new joint. The chorus says it all!

“I’m in the club, They stare ear to ear, Doing my Polo stance, Swag Champ, Belt on my pants, doing the Camera dance…”

NEW MUSIC: ELZ “Q.U. Anthem!”

Elz is readying his “Q.U. Anthem” – an ode to Queens.

But until then, check out this dope joint from the kid down below, and let us know what you think.

What’s a birthday without a birthday cake, but c’mon, what’s a birthday without a “Birthday Surprise?”

NEW MUSIC: ELZ Feat. Halftime & Kai Roy’al “Camera Dance!”

Queens native Elz, who reps his borough with such pride, delivers this new cut for his fans. And of course, ain’t nothing better than the gift of music. It’s the gift that’ll leave you entranced for hours.

NEW MUSIC: ELZ “Q.U. Anthem!”

But even though Elz’ “Birthday Surprise” remix is something short, it’s something short and sweet.

Spitting game, he raps:

“Rocking Cartier frames and a watch with no name, I said your style’s fire, no propane…”

ELZ reps his community hard with this one!

NEW MUSIC: ELZ “How To Rhyme (State Of Emergency)!”

New York upstart ELZ, who released the visuals to “How To Rhyme (State Of Emergency)” off his N.Y. Timesmixtape, now drops this dope freestyle joint over Naughty By Nature‘s “Uptown Anthem” instrumental. There’s even a Nas sample that lets it be known that Queens is written all over this.

NEW MUSIC: L “Peso” Freestyle!

He raps:

“Queens native, rap legislative, flow orchestrated, leave mics mutated..”

ELZ is for sure a new player to look out for in this game.

You can follow him on Twitter @G5_Elz.

Check it out, and let us know what you think.

ELZ “How To Rhyme (State Of Emergency)” (NEW VIDEO)

The dude you see standing next to Run D.M.C. in the picture above is legendary producer Larry Smith.

In the video you see at the bottom is Larry’s son, a dope young spitter from Queens called ELZ

“How To Rhyme (State Of Emergency)”

We’ve posted some music from the kid before, and every time we do, it always seems to get a strong response.

So we thought you’d like to see the official video for the rapper’s super dope “Beats to Rhyme” freestyle, “How To Rhyme (State of Emergency).”

MUSIC: L “Peso” Freestyle

In the video, we see the young rapper take us on a trip all around Queens.

From the project hallways to Citi Field, the boy goes everywhere. It’s a pretty dope video with a dope freestyle, and it’s clear that music runs in the genes.

Check out the video and let us know what you think!

Up-and-coming Queens rapper L is back with some hot new music.

“How To Rhyme (State Of Emergency)”

The North Side Queens native delivers an outstanding track with the bravado and confidence reserved for those who’ve obtained superstardom. The youngin’ rocks out to A$AP Rocky‘s hit single “Peso.”

And we have to say, he does the beat justice. L mimics A$AP’s flow and spits:

“I be that money mother fucker. Queens is what I’m repping.

Black damier stepping, packing automatic weapons.”

The guy definitely has a bright future ahead of him.

We try our best to keep our ears close to the streets, so we can put you on to what’s bubbling on the underground.

With that being said, GlobalGrind would like to introduce you to L, who reps Northside Queens.

We listened to some of his stuff, and the kid can spit. He tries to teach others to rap on “How To Rhyme (State Of Emergency),” the first single off of his debut mixtape, N.Y. Times.

On the track, that dude L rocks over Run D.M.C.’s classic track “Beats To The Rhyme.”

Using an ’80s-style-old-school flow L raps:

The lyrical tyrant, composition is violent. No melody, check out my rhyming. What I’m designing or defining, nothing mythical just New York State of Mine-ing.

It’s dope track that you should check out. Trust.
